The Aoi Matsuri is an annual festival of Shimogamo Shrine and Kamigamo Shrine, featuring an elegant procession on May 15th.
All elements, including the ox-drawn carriages, horses, and the robes of the attendants, are adorned with futaba aoi (wild ginger) intertwined with what is said to be 15,000 sprigs of katsura (Japanese Judas tree).
It seems that futaba aoi once grew extensively within the grounds of Kamigamo Shrine, but due to the risks of relying solely on the shrine's premises, the "Aoi Project" was launched. This initiative involves cultivating the plants externally, with participants planting them individually and bringing them back a year later.
Perhaps it was around this time that the futaba aoi we received began to sprout cute leaves in the miniature garden outside our shop every April.
*In May, when the leaves grow, purplish-brown flowers bloom downwards from the base of the leaves.
